A Strong Marriage Is Where Fatherhood Begins

When does a man become a father? Most people would say the day his child is born. But in many ways, fatherhood begins much earlier. It begins when a man chooses to love his wife faithfully, embraces the vocation of marriage, and opens his heart to God’s plan for their family. That is one of the beautiful lessons of Natural Family Planning (NFP).
We often think about fertility, charting, and planning for a family. Those things certainly matter. Yet NFP is much more than a technique. It is a way of living that teaches husbands and wives to communicate honestly, pray together, and discern God’s will as they navigate each season of married life.
Transformed View
For Couple to Couple League‘s Ministry Consultant, Nick Vicinanzo, marriage transformed the way he viewed his future. Looking back, he says, “Marriage was the foundation on which everything else in my life needed to be built. I actually have found marriage to be the most freeing adventure possible.” When he and his wife, Kathleen, welcomed their first child this spring, that foundation became even more meaningful.
Many couples begin marriage with questions about work, finances, and when to welcome children. Those conversations can feel overwhelming. NFP gives couples a way to approach them together, with confidence. By understanding the gift of their shared fertility and learning to discern as a couple, husbands and wives discover that God’s design for marriage is both practical and deeply life-giving.
As Nick recently shared, “NFP has given us the opportunity to truly discern God’s plan for our family, not just our own personal designs for the family.” That perspective reflects the heart of authentic responsible parenthood. Christian marriage is not about controlling every outcome. It is about growing in trust, making thoughtful decisions together, and remaining open to the Lord’s guidance. For men, this is where fatherhood actually begins.
NFP Prepares for Fatherhood
Whether a couple is hoping to welcome a child soon or prayerfully postponing pregnancy for serious reasons, the practice of NFP strengthens the relationship itself. The habits of listening, sacrificing, and seeking what is best for one another become part of everyday married life. Over time, those same habits help prepare husbands, and wives, for the joys and responsibilities of parenthood.
Consider taking a fresh look at God’s design for marriage. If you are engaged, newly married, or simply looking to deepen your relationship after many years together, there is always something new to discover through Natural Family Planning.
